About Derek

Derek is best friends with Benjamin Hemmings. Through their camaraderie, he shows himself to be quite loyal and reliable. The man you would trust to look after your wife, keep your business affloat--its no wonder that such a man could be taken in by duplicity and dishonesty. This in no way concludes that he is naive about people and the world around him, but that sometimes nice men can be swayed by nice packages. The package in question: Shalia Mendez. This fair african, american damsel mozied into town and right into Derek's bed--with a little assistance from a special drug. To his credit, when he awoke to find Shalia in his bed and no recollection of what occurred the previous night, he was immediately suspiciously. Shalia, however, managed to keep his suspicions at bay, especially during their whole STD scare. Once their first set of tests came back negative, she revealed they got hitched during their one-night stand. After seeing the valid marriage license, Derek told his wife they needed to file for divorce. She agreed. However, over the next several months, they grew closer and talks of divorce ceased.

Ben, however, remained suspicious of Shalia, and tried to convince his friend that there was a bigger plot at hand. When Ben later vanishes, Derek and Shanna (Ben's wife) are placed on opposing sides. Shanna blamed Derek for her husband's disappearance because it was clear to everyone that he did not trust Shalia. Derek continued to defend his wife, suggesting that Ben's disapperance was mob-connected (i.e. Shanna's parents). Naturally, she took offense, reminding him once more that his wife's mysterious past was the reason Ben left town. It is finally confirmed one dark evening by Detective Ralph Lombard that Ben was killed in plane crash. As the sick reality set in, Derek realized that he needed to be the one to tell his friend's wife. As one could expect, Ben's death quickly escalated into another argument about Shalia, but it was Derek that Shanna ultimately blamed for her husband's death.
